Smile Blessing (Mi-so-bok) | Blessing Series #07

Mi-so-bok (Smile Blessing), artwork No. 14, 2025 - Kim Kyungho, Korean munjado painting

Before you read anything about this painting, look at it for ten seconds. Where does your eye land first? Whatever you noticed first is already part of the story.

This is Mi-so-bok (微笑福), the "Smile Blessing," from Kim Kyungho's Blessing Series. The series takes munjado, the Korean tradition of painting built around written characters, and gives it a contemporary voice.

A blessing of every size

When people talk about blessings, they usually mean big things: health, wealth, success. A smile is a blessing too, in every size. It costs nothing, needs no occasion, and you can give it to a stranger without saying a word.

That is why we think a smile belongs in a series about blessings. It reminds us that good fortune is not only something that arrives. It is also something we pass along.

Why now

On November 7, the Korean calendar marks Ipdong, the first day of winter. The days get shorter, the air gets sharper, and people start to pull their shoulders in. It is a good moment to remember how much warmth a smile can carry.

The artist's words

A smile is a flower garden on the face. Some smiles are small buds with a faint fragrance. Others have a deep perfume and large petals, and you notice them the moment they arrive.

Do we smile because blessings come? Or do blessings come because we smile?

This is Mi-so-bok, painted in the hope that your face is always full of smiles more beautiful than flowers.

If you see something else in the painting, that is part of how munjado is meant to be enjoyed.

One small thing to try

Who made you smile this week? Send them a smile back today. That is the whole blessing.
